Part 1: Soil Inspection Section A: National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Survey The NRCS, a department of the USDA, publishes detailed soil information on its website. The NRCS soil surveys are based on native soil. During the homebuilding process, lots are graded. This grading process, and the cut (removal) and fill (import of non-native soil), can alter your soil conditions. Therefore, we like to conduct a separate soil textural test and a separate percolation test. Although the online soil data is extremely technical, we only focus on data relevant to the home gardener. Your garden soils texture will be displayed on the soil texture graph. This data is site specific and instrumental in helping you achieve the best results possible from your garden.
